Ford Motor and SunPower: In Partnership to Produce Solar Charging Stations

Ford

All thanks to the partnership of Ford Motor and SunPower, buyers of Ford plug-in vehicles will be able to charge their cars with the help of solar power, including the upcoming Ford Focus Electric.

Ford now focuses on its electric vehicles, popular as EVs. Through the ‘Drive Green for Life’ program, the owners of zero-emission EV can now have their home-based, solar-powered charging station. The program is to provide rooftop solar systems that generate clean enough, renewable energy to help reduce the usage of electricity needed for charging Ford Focus. To satisfy the energy demands for an electric vehicle that drives about 1,000 miles per month, the ‘Drive Green for Life’ program will also be installing enough panels. The $10,000 price tag does not include roof modifications or excessive wiring.

The 2.5 kilowatts (kW) rooftop solar system was meant to accommodate Ford Focus owners who drive about 1,000 miles a month. The system is made up of high-efficient solar panels that generate approximately 3,000 kW hours of electricity a year. The system is inclusive of a residential monitoring system that tracks the performance of the solar system on the web or iPhone application.

‘To kick-start the installation process, a SunPower dealer will contact and come to the homes of interested Focus Electric customers.’ said Ford.
